Norway Identifies Hazardous Substances in Consumer Goods Purchased Online

The Norwegian Environment Agency has released a report into hazardous substances found in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), and sports and leisure goods that are sold online.

This is the second report into hazardous substances in consumer goods sold online that the agency has released in 2020. The first, issued on April 30, 2020, found that a large number of products contained substances that were harmful to human health and the environment.

The second report, published on November 9, 2020, detailed the results of the assessments done on 99 products purchased by the agency in April 2020 from 22 different websites (14 in Norway and 8 in the EU). Products that were bought included headphones, toys with lights and clocks, swimming and exercise equipment, and bath toys. 42 products were EEE.

Of the bought products, 80 were sent for independent evaluation. These evaluations identified a variety of hazardous substances, including phthalates, short-chained chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), chrome VI (Cr(VI)), cadmium, nickel, lead and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

The third-party laboratories found:

  • 24 products contained hazardous substances, 7 of them contained substances exceeding the limits of relevant regulations
  • 21 products lacked mandatory marking (CE marking, information on manufacturers or importers, recycling labels, etc.)

Norway has recalled non-compliant products and banned their sale. The report also calls for more stringent law enforcement.
