SGN celebrates new milestone in ambition to achieve net zero

Gas distribution network SGN is celebrating a prestigious milestone in its ambition to achieve net zero by 2045.

We’ve achieved the Taking Action tier of the Carbon Trust’s Route to Net Zero Standard for our carbon emissions reductions.

The Carbon Trust’s Route to Net Zero Standard is the only certification helping organisations around the world to measure and manage their emissions, inform carbon reduction strategies, and align targets for the future with tailored advice from trusted experts.

Reducing our operational carbon footprint alongside the critical work we are doing to prepare our gas networks for a clean energy transition are key in the fight against climate change. By achieving the certification, we have demonstrated that we’re taking action on a route towards achieving net zero by 2045 as pledged in our Environment Strategy. This tier of certification includes showing an historical reduction in operational emissions, setting a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target, and developing good foundational carbon management practices.

To build upon this achievement, the Carbon Trust has recommended we should make some improvements to our carbon management process and provides even clearer progress reporting on our initiatives to reduce emissions.

Carolina Karlstrom, Head of Sustainability at SGN, said: “We’re delighted to be working with the Carbon Trust to continue our efforts to reduce our carbon emissions. The Route to Net Zero Standard Taking Action certification shows our commitment towards a decarbonised future and we’re proud to be leading the way in the energy industry as an early adopter of the new standard and as a named Pathfinder.

“The quantitative requirements of the Route to Net Zero Standard were met with a 4% reduction of our carbon footprint. Assessed against the carbon management requirements of the Route to Net Zero Standard, we received a score of 72.5% across our governance, implementation, measurement and stakeholder engagement processes and activities. In particular, we’re proud of our scores on supply chain engagement and staff engagement, where we scored 90%.”

Our Environment Strategy was launched in 2021 and sets out how we will reduce our emissions as we work to develop a world-leading green gas network powered by hydrogen. The Strategy is based around five pillars that demonstrate our long-term environmental ambitions. The pillars are:

  • Net zero business carbon emissions
  • Engaging with our supply chain
  • Boosting biodiversity
  • Transitioning towards a circular economy
  • Supporting the transition to a hydrogen economy
