ESOF 2010 July 2nd-7th
We are holding two sessions with Elsevier at ESOF 2010 in Turin, Italy.
WHAT’S UP WITH PEER REVIEW?
Room 9, Lingotto Conference and Exhibition Centre
Sunday 4th July 2010 10:30-11:45
Should peer review detect plagiarism, bias or fraud? What does peer review do for science and what does the scientific community want it to do for them? Should reviewers remain anonymous? Does it illuminate good ideas or shut them down?
Using highlights from a survey of over 4,000 scientists, the panel will discuss the future of peer review in policy, research and public debates and reflect on some of the recent debates about peer review. What are the challenges to peer review? Does it need to change to cope with new challenges such as the expansion of the research community and the development of new technology? What are scientists’ roles and responsibilities in the quality management of research?
Speakers: Dr Philip Campbell, Editor-in-Chief, Nature; Dr Tommaso Dorigo, Research Scientist, University of Padova; Adrian Mulligan, Associate Director Research, Elsevier; Tracey Brown, Managing Director, Sense About Science
WARRIORS AGAINST CLAPTRAP
Are myth busters the new generation of civic scientists?
Room 3, Lingotto Conference and Exhibition Centre
Monday 5th July 2010 15:45 - 17:00
Should all scientists confront bad science? Will it create public scepticism or cynicism? How does it affect the relationship between scientists and the media?
Evidence hunting scientists and campaigns debunking medical myths have attracted widespread media attention. The panel will discuss whether myth busting is the future of the civic scientist and whether this will raise the quality of scientific debate.
Speakers: Clive Cookson, The Financial Times; Dr Daniella Muallem, Voice of Young Science; Professor Sergio Della Sala, University of Edinburgh and author Mind Myths; Dr Ana Godhino, Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia; Tracey Brown, Sense About Science
